1/16 Greek!!

So this weekend I went to a Greek Festival. I didn't really know what to expect at this 43rd annual event, but I was kinda thinking somthing similar to a state fair type thing, but in a greek sorta way! Well, this festival had a building that was called the gift shop (took a total of about two minutes to walk through), a folk dance performance (didn't get to see that), a couple of jupitar jumps for the kiddos, and food booths! Not much to it, so i'm sure most people just come for the food and wine! As I was saying, pretty much just like a state fair, you come for the overpriced food! We'll come back to the topic of food here in a bit but let me talk a little more about the Greek life! On the way to the festival I remembered that I have Greek in my family but I couldn't remember how much? The result: 1/16! So just a tiny bit, but my family reconizes and celebrates the fact that we have Greek in us by fixing some yummy little treats, which brings me back to the food!

Here is a gyro that is slices of lamb and beef on pita bread with onions, tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce.

That sauce may look a little gross up there on top, but spread it out a little and it's delish!

Here's a couple of pastry items that we tried out.

Finikia: It's a sweet honey cookie with spices, topped with nuts. Reminded me of pumpkin bread! Good!

Baklava: Nuts, butter, and spices in layers of filo pastry, with honey syrup on the top! Also, good! I have relative that makes these! Eh!

Kourambiedes: Butter cookies with toasted almonds with powdered sugar on top! We didn't get one of these at the festival, but my grandma and her cousin who are 1/4 Greek make these! They're pretty good..... for a butter cookie!

Another tid bit: Greeks also shout the word, OPA! A word shouted frequently at the Greek Festival! We weren't for sure what it meant but after a little research it shows that it's a word of cheer or a word used in celebration!

And that concludes my informational sesssion on the Greek Festival! Hey, like I said it was all about the food! I know what you're thinking, Kara's life is so boring that she has to do a whole blog over food!

Loving food, Kara
